About Make it in the North Make it in the North is a non-profit project and platform fully in English. Its mission is to connect English-speaking jobseekers, including international students, (highly skilled) migrants, spouses and permit holders, with international-friendly companies in Groningen and the Northern Netherlands.
Make it in the North is a collaborative project between local governments, knowledge institutions and companies. It started in 2018 and has had its own project team since 2021. The organisation acts as a connecting point between internationals and companies, in the form of an online job portal and its own career and networking events. We are excited to share an opportunity for university students and early career researchers interested in exoplanets, planetary science, or machine learning.
We are currently organising the fourth edition of the ExoHack, a hackathon series on exoplanet characterisation, which will come for the first time in Groningen.
The Exoplanet Hackathon series will invite participants to develop ML methods for characterising exoplanet atmospheres using simulated Ariel mission data. This event is for university students and early career professionals or scientists from different disciplines to work on cutting-edge problems in exoplanet science, with talks from scientists involved in the Ariel mission and networking opportunities.
Who should attend: Students and researchers (bachelor's to postdoc level) with an interest in ML, exoplanets, or scientific data analysis. No prior expertise in either ML or astrophysics is required—we will provide context and support. Participants can register as individuals or in teams of 3–4.
What's provided: Food included! ~90,000 simulated Ariel observations, a pre-hackathon seminar (optional), expert talks, and full collaboration space.
Do we need to pay to attend? No! It's completely free thanks to the support of our funders.
On Friday, April 10, the NNV, together with Radboud University Nijmegen, is organizing the major annual physics congress FYSICA 2026.
Location: De Vasim, formerly an industrial complex, now a center for cultural, sporting, and scientific activities on the Waal River.
Under the motto High Energy, Strong Force, there will be lectures, focus sessions, excursions, and you can play speed checkers against world champion Jan Groenendijk.
Students receive significant discounts; the study association Marie Curie is organizing two sessions specifically for students:
